Imdb Casino Royale 11/14/ · Casino Royale was the 4th highest-grossing film of , and was the highest-grossing instalment of the James Bond series until Skyfall surpassed it in November Upon its release in the United Kingdom, Casino Royale broke series records on both opening day—£ million—and opening weekend—£13,,/ Casino Royale is the 21st entry in the official James Bond film series and marked the debut of Daniel Craig as Agent The film, which rebooted the series, follows Bond (recently promoted to "00" status) as he is assigned a mission to participate in a high stakes poker game involving a banker who launders money for terrorist organizations. Casino Royale is a British-American spy parody film originally produced by Columbia Pictures featuring an ensemble granadajazzclub.com is loosely based on Ian Fleming's first James Bond granadajazzclub.com film stars David Niven as the "original" Bond, Sir James Bond Forced out of retirement to investigate the deaths and disappearances of international spies, he soon battles the mysterious Dr. Noah and .

Maybe "they" know some things I don't about , maybe I've been missing something about the character. Plus, the hype around the production was excellent, the rumor was that the filmmakers have decided to be more daring in many aspects.

Nothing wrong with that, as a long as you know what you're doing. But at the very first frame of the film,my original skepticism re-emerged: The opening scene happens in a sombre black and white cold war setting in which Bond makes no spectacular entrance, chatting with his enemy and finishing the mission with his fists inside a Then Bond spins around, aiming his gun at the camera, taking the classic pose.

Right then, I couldn't help myself but noticing the restroom tiles in the background! Still, let's give them a second chance, here comes the long-awaited opening credits.

A beautiful animation of paisley patterns and stylized men fighting in slow-motion,turning into flying hearts, spades, clubs and diamonds at each blow.

But something is missing: where are the gorgeous nude feminine silhouettes? Where are the girls? At this point, I feared the worst: did the producers decide purposely to get rid of everything we actually loved about James Bond?!

But here comes hope:James Bond chases a man through a building site, climbing on cranes, jumping and falling hard. Great, this might not be a real James Bond flick, but at least, we're in for some good entertainment.

Wrong: The rest of the film is nothing but a long two and a half hours long! No Monneypenny,no "Q",no "R", and every time "M" Judi Drench appears on the screen, the ONLY thing she ever does is begging Bond to stop doing what he's doing and come back to his senses.

Yet,all I could hear from her was: "What have you done to James Bond? Who are you, blond man?! Why don't you ever smile?

Why don't you ever say anything witty? How come the only gadget you use is a cell phone? How dare you wreck THE Aston Martin in only 3 minutes?

How could you fall in love with such a boring girl? What do you want from us? Bring us back England's most precious hero! Does he cheat?

He might be a villain, but will not take his cruelty as far as We know he's the villain since his left eye bleeds once in a while and he acts like everything is fine.

Who knows, maybe someday,we'll get to see a villain who plays Monopoly with a runny nose. So scary. Then I thought: "I get it!

His damaged eye is in fact a technological wonder that allows him to see the other player's cards thanks to the mysterious blond girl, in the background, who's eye is a camera placed surgically inside her head and feeds Le Chiffre with her own vision!

Was I right? Of course not, that would be something you'd see in a James Bond film But here comes the most sacrilegious scene EVER to come out of a James Bond film: James Bond let's keep using this name, for the lack of a better one is taken prisoner and dragged in a basement, he is entirely stripped from his clothes and attached on a chair without a seat, letting 's "genitals" dangling from underneath Yes,you heard right.

Le Chiffre proceeds to swing a large heavy rope and hits her majesty's favorite secret agent's nuts over and over.

Bond screams in pain but does not reveal the bank account number. What a man. Does he escape? Does he fight back in the most ingenious manner and eliminates his torturer?

No, he passes out and wakes up in a hospital. The torture may have stopped for Bond, but increases for me: Bond finds comfort in the arms of his girlfriend Vesper yes, girlfriend who tells him, to rebuild his pride, that even if the only thing left from him was his little finger, she would still love him.

To which, the emasculated James Bond replies watch out, humor coming your way : "That's because you know what I can do with my little finger.

And don't we know that if Bond was ever blown to smithereens, the only thing left from him should precisely be his genitals? There were other problems with the film of course, such as the boring story, and the fact that the casino which seemed to be the perfect setting for a James Bond film turned out to be so poorly exploited.

Giving this film one star might not be fair do you ever read a review unless it has a 1 or a 10 star rating?

The problem is that the film was made with the wrong "spirit" and doesn't take in consideration that, unlike other movies, James Bond belongs more to the public than to its makers, and that this rare fact deserves to be honored.

Don't mess with MY James Bond. I am not the biggest James Bond fan, but I have quite enjoyed the franchise.

Until now. There are so many things in this film that do not make sense that I don't know where to begin. First of all I am convinced that Daniel Craig had a hangover one day one of many judging by his face and was offered a role in the movie called Casino Royale about which he most certainly thought that it is a sequel to his well made Layer Cake, for which he would be perfect.

A successful cocaine dealer working his way to be England's Mafia elite will suit him much better than the British suave top spy. The phrase: "The men want to be him and the women want to be with him" does not match the criteria.

I could not help but laugh seeing him emerging from the water with his egg shaped head, the sticking out trans illuminating ears and the straw organized hair.

I definitely did not want to be him. Only thing to redirect the concentration of a movie goer to something else was to put him in the gym for six months prior to the shooting of the movie.

Second of all I went to see this movie with a bit of objectivity, listening to critics saying that it is a very well made action movie.

I probably went to see the wrong film. The only exiting action sequence is the free-running chase through the streets in Uganda. It involved the free running champion Sebastien Foucan where Craig's stunt was trying his best not to ruin the scene.

Otherwise there are no new ideas no new camera angles and most of the scenes have been in the other movies before. The petrol tank truck chase on the airport runway is like a bad copy from the Raiders of the Lost ark.

Harrison did a much better job and it was original. The sequence where Bond is mistaken for a parking attendant is the only ray of bright witty humor Bond is supposed to have and is missing and again it was used in the movies so many times before.

The latest I remember by Vin Diesel in XXX The whole scene was badly executed and with no follow up logic. Why would security guys run towards the car to find out what has happened when there are security cameras in the security room which was left open for Bond to use the equipment???

Don't even let me start on the car chase. Sorry, what car chase? Bond goes around a couple of curves and unintentionally when was the last time Bond unintentionally?

Yes he is a great actor, just watch his facial expression before the stunt man breaks the world record in "car flipping".

Editing of the poker games in the casino is just amateurish. Cutting the fight scene in half to add a dialog from different surroundings just for the viewer to find out that "Mr.

Bond has changed his shirt" is called home made editing. Making the movie about the beginnings of James Bond earning his "00" status? You start with a black and white scene which really gives you an impression about the times before it all started.

You pick a 38 year old actor who looks "used". You give him no gadgets. Except latest satellite navigation telephones and a high tech heart defibrillator which is a standard accessory of his latest model Aston Martin by the way Mrs.

Broccoli did you really think that invisible car previously was unrealistic? Now you have a top spy so you give him an anti terrorist mission.

Montenegrian Police officers patrolling the wealthy town where 'Casino Royale' is located, are armed with AKSU carbines. The soldiers guarding at the Nambutu Embassy in Madagascar can be seen using what on close examination is determined to be a Romanian SAR-3, a 5.

The police at Miami Airport can be seen using Colt AR Law Enforcement Carbines. They are noted as such instead of M4A1 carbines because they have 16" barrels instead of This means they were converted to full-auto for the film.

Another weapon visible in the opening sequence in the hands of a rebel soldier is a PKM light machine gun. A DShK heavy machine gun appears to be a mounted on a rebel "technical".

The Zastava M55 A2 20mm flak gun is seen among the weapons in the Uganda rebel camp. It is a towed triple ground mount fitted with three license-built Hispano-Suiza HS.

Two SPG-9D recoilless guns are seen in the Ugandan camp. The gunbarrel sequence was shown in a completely different way as Bond is seen in it just prior to the opening credits.

Seeing Bond wishes to rescue her, she locks the door, indicating he should save himself. Bond is unable to free Vesper before she drowns. White escapes with the money.

M informs Bond the organization behind Le Chiffre threatened to kill Vesper's lover unless she became a double agent; she likely made a deal later with White, trading the money for Bond's life.

Bond coldly renounces Vesper as a traitor, saying "the bitch is dead", and returns to service. Realizing Vesper left her phone to help him, he checks the contacts and locates Mr.

White at an estate in Lake Como. Shooting him in the leg, introduces himself: "The name's Bond. James Bond. Casino Royale includes a cameo by British entrepreneur Richard Branson seen being frisked at Miami International Airport.

The cameo was cut out of the in-flight versions shown on British Airways' in-flight entertainment systems, and the Virgin Atlantic aircraft Branson supplied had its tail fin bearing the company logo obscured.

Casino Royale had been produced as a television episode starring Barry Nelson as Bond and Peter Lorre as the villain Le Chiffre, as well as a non-canonical ensemble satirical film starring David Niven, Peter Sellers and Woody Allen.

Eon Productions gained the rights to Casino Royale in after Sony Pictures Entertainment exchanged them for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's rights to Spider-Man.

In March , Neal Purvis and Robert Wade began writing a screenplay for Pierce Brosnan as Bond, aiming to bring back the flavour of Ian Fleming's original Bond novels.

Paul Haggis' main contribution was to rewrite the climax of the film. He explained, "the draft that was there was very faithful to the book and there was a confession, so in the original draft, the character confessed and killed herself.

She then sent Bond to chase after the villains; Bond chased the villains into the house. I don't know why but I thought that Vesper had to be in the sinking house and Bond has to want to kill her and then try and save her.

Director Quentin Tarantino expressed interest in directing an adaptation of Casino Royale, but Eon was not interested.

He claims to have worked behind the scenes with the Fleming family, and believed this was the reason why filmmakers finally went ahead with Casino Royale.

Tarantino also said he would have set it in the s and would have only made it with Pierce Brosnan as Bond. In February , Martin Campbell, who previously directed GoldenEye , was announced as the film's director.

Later in , Sony led a consortium that purchased MGM, allowing Sony to gain distribution rights starting with the film.

Eon believed that it had relied too heavily on computer-generated imagery effects in the more recent films, particularly Die Another Day, and was keen to accomplish the stunts in Casino Royale "the old fashioned way".

In keeping with this drive for more realism, screenwriters Purvis, Wade and Haggis wanted the script to follow as closely as possible the original novel, keeping Fleming's darker storyline and characterization of Bond.

Due to the then-existing copyright issues related to the ownership of Thunderball, the organization of which Mr White is a part is not named Spectre.

Casting Pierce Brosnan had signed a deal for four films when he was cast in the role of James Bond. This was fulfilled with the production of Die Another Day in Brosnan officially announced he was stepping down in February At one point, producer Michael G.

Wilson claimed over names were being considered for his replacement. New Zealander Karl Urban was considered, but was unable to make the screen test due to filming commitments.

According to Martin Campbell, Henry Cavill was the only other actor in serious contention for the role, but at 22 years old, he was considered too young.

Australian actor Sam Worthington and Scottish actor Dougray Scott were also considered. In May , British actor Daniel Craig stated MGM and producers Michael G.

Wilson and Barbara Broccoli had assured him he would get the role of Bond, and Matthew Vaughn told reporters MGM offered him the opportunity to direct the new film, but Eon Productions at that point had not approached either of them.

A year beforehand, Craig rejected the idea of starring, as he felt the series had descended into formula; only when he read the script did he become interested.

Craig read all of Fleming's novels to prepare for the part, and cited Mossad and British Secret Service agents who served as advisors on the set of Munich as inspiring because, "Bond has just come out of the service and he's a killer.

You can see it in their eyes, you know immediately: oh, hello, he's a killer. There's a look. These guys walk into a room and very subtly they check the perimeters for an exit.

That's the sort of thing I wanted. Taking time off from reshoots for The Invasion, a business-suit clad, rather long-haired Craig boarded a Royal Marines Rigid Raider from HMS Belfast before travelling to HMS President, where he was introduced to the world's press.

Controversy followed the decision, with some critics and fans expressing doubt the producers had made the right choice. The film features the song " The Look of Love " performed by Dusty Springfield.

It is played in the scene of Vesper Lynd recruiting Evelyn Tremble, seen through a man-size aquarium in a seductive walk.

It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The song was a Top 10 radio hit at the KGB and KHJ radio stations. It was heard again in the first Austin Powers film, which was to a degree inspired by Casino Royale.

Bacharach would later rework two tracks of the score into songs: "Home James, Don't Spare the Horses" was re-arranged as "Bond Street", appearing on Bacharach's album Reach Out , and "Flying Saucer — First Stop Berlin", was reworked with vocals as "Let the Love Come Through" by orchestra leader and arranger Roland Shaw.

A clarinet melody would later be featured in a Cracker Jack peanut popcorn commercial. As an in-joke, a brief snippet of John Barry 's song " Born Free " is used in the film.

At the time, Barry was the main composer for the Eon Bond series, and said song had won an Academy Award over Bacharach's own " Alfie ".

The cover art was done by Robert McGinnis , based on the film poster. The soundtrack album became famous among audio purists for the excellence of its recording.

The film soundtrack has since been released by other companies in different configurations including complete score releases. The highly regarded master tapes were damaged, however, during a s remastering [ citation needed ] so none of the subsequent re-releases is considered to be as fine as the original LP release.

However, during filming the project ran into several problems and the shoot ran months over schedule, with the costs also running well over.

The problems postponed the launch until April Casino Royale had its world premiere in London's Odeon Leicester Square on 13 April , breaking many opening records in the theatre's history.

When domestic box-office receipts are adjusted for inflation, Casino Royale is 20th-largest grossing of all the Bond films.

No advance press screenings of Casino Royale were held, leading reviews to only appear after the premiere.

Writing in , Danny Peary noted, "It's hard to believe that in we actually waited in anticipation for this so-called James Bond spoof. It was a disappointment then; it's a curio today, but just as hard to get through.

In fact, I recommend you see it on television when it's in a two-hour including commercials slot.

Then you won't expect it to make any sense. A few recent reviewers have been more impressed by the film. Andrea LeVasseur, in the AllMovie review, called it "the original ultimate spy spoof", and opined that the "nearly impossible to follow" plot made it "a satire to the highest degree".

Further describing it as a "hideous, zany disaster" LeVasseur concluded that it was "a psychedelic, absurd masterpiece". It is the anti-auteur work of all time, a film shaped by the very zeitgeist it took on.

In his review of the film, Leonard Maltin remarked, "Money, money everywhere, but [the] film is terribly uneven — sometimes funny, often not.

The website's critical consensus states: "A goofy, dated parody of spy movie cliches, Casino Royale squanders its all-star cast on a meandering, mostly laugh-free script.

Some Kind of Hero: The Remarkable Story of the James Bond Films. The real Bond David Niven went into retirement when his skills were at their peak.

This Bond is quite different than the Bond we know--he is almost chaste, he's a homebody, he dedicates each evening's twilight to playing Debussy on the piano, and so on.

Casino Royale has it that the Bond we know from other films is a decoy. A group of older men, representing the secret agencies of the US, the UK, Russia and France, are on their way to the real Bond's home to ask for his assistance.

It seems that someone has been trying to wipe out as many secret agents as they can. While they're pitching the idea of coming out of retirement to Bond, they're attacked.

Bond's house is blown up, and he implicitly agrees to the assignment. Casino Royale is the story of the real Bond trying to get to the bottom of the sinister agent-wipeout plan.

Part of carrying that out involves changing the identity of nearly every spy to James Bond--if the real Bond is to work unimpeded, he can't always be worrying about being killed by the criminal mastermind.

Each director worked on a different segment in relative isolation from the rest. This went so far as having their own portions of the script written.

The problem was that despite Eon Productions the production company behind most of the Bond films not owning the rights to Casino Royale, they had used many of the "bits" in other Bond films.

So there wasn't much of the book left to adapt. In addition, it was felt that a serious alternative Bond film couldn't compete against the Albert R.

So Casino Royale producers Jerry Bresler, John Dark and Charles K. Each segment features a different set of stars--the primary sets centering on Niven, Woody Allen, and Peter Sellers with Ursula Andress and Orson Welles.

Those are all great actors, and great comedians in at least two cases. They all do a bit of their own schtick--in some cases, they demanded this.

Woody does his neurotic New York Jew character, Peter Sellers rides the gray area between bumbling buffoon and suave playboy, with a couple generic Indian and Chinese impersonations thrown in for good measure, Orson Welles does his best Paul Masson Wine-pitching "elder statesman" demeanor, and also throws in a few of his more famous magic tricks.

All of this stuff is good, but does it work as a unified film? And if that's not enough evidence for you, consider that the segments were further chopped up into set-pieces.

Each set piece ends up being largely independent--you could almost see this as a series of skits on a similar theme. These facts make Casino Royale not quite work.

It's certainly no match for a legitimate Bond film, despite the similarity of location-hopping, outrageous villains, spy gadgets and so on.

Apparently, producer Barbara Broccoli originally wanted Clooney for 6 49 Lotto Canada role, and eventually met him to discuss the part, but Clooney turned it down, saying, "I'm American, and it wasn't right for James Bond, James Bond is English, and not American.
